This weekend saw the reveal of a Toy Story world which is being introduced in Kingdom Hearts 3. And a new world means a new keyblade with two new transformations. Here’s what Nomura had to say on the subject, according to an interview with Game Informer:

The progressive transformation of the keyblade explains why the second transformation is always such an escalation over the first. Imagine being a Heartless battling this boy Sora with his giant key. It suddenly transforms into an odd crossbow, only to then turn into a bazooka. It’s just not fair. But it probably feels extremely rewarding for the player.

Nomura wasn’t willing to divulge exactly how the transformation process is activated, citing the feature being in flux due to the ever-changing development process. Yet it kind of feels like Nomura already did mention it in his first quote. Players who connect attacks and combos should be able to activate the keyblade transformations fluidly in combat. Maybe Nomura simply didn’t want to get into specific combat actions and controls.

Summons are another feature in Kingdom Hearts 3 that Nomura isn’t ready to start talking about in detail. The feature in past Kingdom Hearts games allowed Sora to summon characters in the midst of battle, characters like Genie from Aladdin, Tinker Bell, Final Fantasy 7’s Cloud, and more. Here’s the hint regarding summons in Kingdom Hearts 3 that Nomura was willing to let slip:

Who knows what Nomura is trying to imply, especially through a Japanese to English translation. Perhaps he means the type of magic used to summon in Kingdom Hearts 3 will be pretty, or perhaps he means the summons themselves will be “pretty” in an oddly translated way of hinting at particular Disney princesses. Nomura is known for giving away more information than his answers portray at first. Yet with Kingdom Hearts 3 finally having a firm release window, Nomura can’t keep all these secrets too much longer.

Kingdom Hearts 3 is planned to launch on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2018.
